making your girlfriend into a sports fan 101...
over at the ladies… blog there was a post this morning about a guy asking how to turn his girlfriend into a sports fan. the ladies… offered some great advice and also gave us girls a chance to comment on what worked on us. i think most girls are already sports fans and don’t know it or don’t want to admit it. i know i had a love for the twins from the few games i went to as a kid where i feverishly waved my homer hankie and thought kirby puckett was the best baseball player ever (granted, i didn’t know about that whole sex scandal-issue to come since i was approximately 6), but beyond the childhood games of catch with my dad, basketball and soccer, i stuck to riding my bike and hiking as outdoor activities. when i met my boyfriend a little over a year ago, i quickly learned that sports was a big par tof his life, and he was a huge help in me growing to be the sports fan i am today. here is what i posted as a response:
“so, this is a fitting post to comment on because as a girl who’s boyfriend has gotten her (more) into sports in the last year, i have first hand advice as to what worked.
1). he was great about me asking dumb questions. i asked ridiculous questions like, “what are those measuring poles for on the football field? what the heck are they doing?”. his dad laughed at me… but my man didn’t, and kindly explained. you have to know that for someone that didn’t grow up with sports as something that was watched every weekend like most families did, some of the rules are bizarre and hard to understand.
2). he invited me to sporting events with him. now, i already loved going to baseball games, and i liked sports, but i didn’t have an understanding of the games or the teams or anything. so going to my first nfl game was a total blast. albeit, it was the chiefs, and they of course lost, but what the heck.
3). two words- steve nash. good lord he’s beautiful, and the man had me read an article about him (in playboy- another stretch for me that i’ve now grown to look forward to in his mail. :)) in which i completely fell in love with him (him meaning steve nash. but it made me love the boyfriend too. :))”
i still can’t quote stats or rbi’s like a real pro, but i do have a love for the royals great baseball butts, steve nash, and a newly found interest that has endless possibilities.
